Old-Style Blues & Two-Fisted Boogie-Woogie

Jul 20, 2015

There must be a ballad worthy of the blues in there somewhere.

On the other hand, through Michalis Limns’ interview at Blues @ Greece with singer, songwriter, pianist Doña Oxford, we learn her song-worthy birth didn’t happen in the bowels of the deep south or some such appropriate location, but outside a hospital in New York City on the Upper East Side.

Oxford “studied her craft with Chuck Berry sideman Johnnie Johnson.…Her style fuses old school blues/soul vocals and two-fisted boogie-woogie piano.”

Rector Neil Tadken of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Monrovia is a longtime friend and colleague of Oxford and says, “Take a bit of Bette, a tad of Tina, and a slice of Stansfield, and you get a deluge of Doña.”

Oxford has performed with the likes of Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Shemekia Copeland, and on August 1st, Oxford will perform a benefit concert under the stars at St. Luke’s.

Opening for Oxford is violinist and pianist Dr. Adam Kendall. “In 1995, Dr. Kendall studied violin performance at UC San Diego and went on to play with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra during a research year abroad from the USC Keck School of Medicine. Kendall will play American Ragtime favorites such at Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer and Aaron Copeland’s Hoedown, and classical selections, which will include Massenet’s Meditation from Thaïs and an excerpt from Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

The $25 entrance fee includes the musical performances, dancing, a soul food dinner, and one free drink.
