It’s like adults in reverse. Shed the practical, the obligatory, and the hum bug. Embrace the silly, wacky, the expressive, the experimental, and the inspired. Get ready for the 37th Ocassional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade Queen tryouts.
Want to be queen? Anyone may try. The competition is fierce, the judges costumed and being fed a diet (i.e. bribes) of beers and smooth talking. Supporters loudly cheer their favorite contestants while Legion members watch the action and take their turn on the dance floor. Snotty Scotty and the Hankies rock the house. Beer and mixed drinks are flowing, and Doo Dah dogs are being consumed by the dozens.
Never tried out before? Call and Paddy at Light Bringer Project will answer your questions and even give you tips. The tryouts are open to everyone, to individuals of all genders, shapes, ages, and persuasions. Join Swami from El Monte, Sabrina the Stimulus Package, Second-Hand Rose, and Buffy the Dog as they try—once again (some people tryout perennially)—to be crowned Doo Dah Queen.
The first 20 Queen hopefuls get in free (otherwise, a $5 cover) and should arrive at 2 p.m. when the doors open and the live music begins, so they may check-in.
Make a plan or come and wing it. Everyone is welcome to play at this party!
