Grab a pen and join us for this popular, lively workshop, which is spiced with stories and tips to empower and inspire writers. We’ll start with a glance at today’s dynamic book business, then we’ll share tips for connecting with editors and agents, as well as creative ideas to help writers refine their craft, and practical thoughts on book promotion (gleaned from interviews with agents and booksellers).

Other highlights: Writing prompts to call forth and tickle the muse; 4-page, resource-rich handout; and Q&A.



Sunday, July 9th, 2-3:30 p.m.:

Join us for a quick look at the various types of editing involved in creating a professional-caliber book. We’ll scan the spectrum, from helping clarify the author’s thinking during the creation stage (developmental editing), through the work that helps establish consistency (line editing and copyediting), and then the final polishing pass to ensure quality (proofreading).

Curious about the human interest aspect of this partnership? You’re in luck, because we’re also going to explore the dynamic between authors and editors. Get ready to have conflict myths debunked—and the stereotype of the editor as a humorless grammarian brandishing a red pen.

We’ll end on a high note by sharing some funny “bloopers”—with tips and tricks that writers can use to avoid making these same mistakes in their own work.

As a special bonus, attendees of this session will receive a professional edit of five pages of their manuscript.

La Cañada Flintridge native Laurie Gibson is a graduate of La Cañada High School, Pasadena City College, and California State University, Northridge. She has edited/proofread hundreds of books, including recent editions of classic novels such as The Color Purple and Mrs. Dalloway, as well as the writing of musician Jimmy Buffett and success guru Brian Tracy.

Her current clients include publishers such as Stanford University and Patagonia Books, as well as New York Times bestselling novelists. Laurie also taught editing for the Extension programs at University of California, San Diego and Los Angeles.
