—St. Augustine of Hippo

Patricia Schults, author of 1,000 Places to See Before You Die first heard “the siren call” of travel and discovery at the age of four. After college, she made a beeline for the first outgoing flight, was astonished to find her first articles got published and subsequently that she could earn a living. For seven years, she spanned the globe, looking for inspiration and magic. Where she landed was as far flung as Tikal to Chicago’s Superdawg hot dog stand.

How did she choose what destinations to include?

In the final analysis, the common denominator I chose was a simple one: that each place impress upon the visitor—and, I hope, upon the reader—some sense of the earth’s magic, integrity, wonder, and legacy.

…I was reminded time and again that travel is always personal, and that no two people walk away from the same experience with the same memories. What it came down to, in the end, is that each of the places in this book is truly, completely, and undeniably inspiring…

Mark Twain, quoted from The Innocents Abroad, wrote, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness….” Travel, when undertaken with a extra dose of curiosity and patience can delight us with surprises, bring moments of genuine awe, and reconfirm our perhaps teetering belief in the good of mankind.
