California Gold, anyone? Even though reruns have continued since the death in 2013 of host Huell Howser, if you need a bit more immersion and are pining for the story behind the story, check out Luis Fuerte’s Louie, Take a Look at This!
On April 8, Fuerte is “in conversation” with Patt Morrison of KPCC at Vroman’s. Books available for purchase and signing.
Huell Howser, the exuberant, hugely popular host of California’s Gold and other California public-television shows, was always exclaiming to the camera, “Louie, take a look at this!” Now, three years after Howser’s death, Louie—aka Luis Fuerte, an award-winning cameraman—shares all the great stories of their adventures exploring California, making memorable television, and showcasing Howser’s infectious love for the Golden State.

Fuerte is a 5-time Emmy Award-winner, was born in San Bernadino, and became a cameraman after two years in the US Navy and attending LA Valley College.
Cassie MacDuff of The Press Enterprise met Fuerte in 2015 before Louie, Take a Look at This! had found a publisher. Fuerte shared a preview manuscript, which MacDuff “devoured, delightedly recalling Howser’s aw-shucks style and the shows that took me to corners of my native state I’d never seen before.… In a breezily written volume, Fuerte shares memories of 19 years behind the camera filming Howser’s famous, quirky interviews and obscure locations across the Golden State.”
Fuerte was the man Howser would call to excitedly, saying, “Louie, take a look at this.”
That was his way of directing the cameraman where to aim his viewfinder. But it also made viewers feel as if they were there. Howser’s childlike enthusiasm was contagious.

Reportedly Fuerte and Yucaipa writer David Duron watched every episode—numbering in the hundreds—of California Gold to jog Fuerte’s memory and Duron interviewed Fuerte for “countless hours” to supply the content of the book.

“It’s as if Huell said, ‘Hey Luis, get ready for your close up!’ This book is just that! A close-up and behind-the-scenes look at the adventures of the guys who brought you one of California’s most popular shows about itself.”
