Amy Winehouse: Before Frank

Sep 4, 2017

Before Frank refers to the life and times of Amy Winehouse before her burst out of obscurity, before the whirl of fame, admiration, recognition, criticism, and judgment. Before her death on July 23, 2011.

Photographer Charles Moriarty was asked in 2001 by James Tyler, friend of 19-year-old singer Amy Winehouse, to “take some photos.”

“My experience then was really just photographing my friends out partying. I would never at that point have considered myself a ‘photographer,'” remarked Moriarty to Niall Flynn of Dazed Digital. The resulting photos from this gig became Moriarty’s book Before Frank, published (thanks to a Kickstarter campaign) five years after the singer’s death.

The Irish photographer ended up shooting the cover for Amy’s debut album, Frank, with the two striking up a friendship that remained tight for two years until Moriarty moved back to his home country. By the time he was back in London again, the girl from the photos—his friend—was now Amy Winehouse The Star; Moriarty could only watch from a distance as her story unfolded in the public eye.

On September 9, Moriarty stops at Gallery 30 South in Pasadena, participating in a Q&A moderated by Esmé Bianco (“Ros” in Game of Thrones), for the US debut of his collection of fifty photographs of Winehouse taken in the two years before the release of her bestselling album Frank in 2003.
